sixteen

I learned from Cody's 16th birthday party that there is too much pressure involved when your mother invites all your friends to come to your home and celebrate in honor of your birthday.  I guess those days are gone.....so, I decided to have a surprise party for Cassidy with her no pressure family.

When she walked in and saw the banner and heard birthday music she panicked for a second and then was so relieved to see her cousins, aunts and uncles, grandma and grandpa, mom, dad and sister.

Cassidy is definitely my daughter.  She is told over and over and over again that she looks like her mom, and I'm not sure she loves it.  She may resemble me in some ways, but she loves being her own person with her own style and personality.  She loves fashion (caraloren.com), interior design (HGTV with mom), drawing (she's really good!), volleyball, cupcakes (Cupcake Wars), country music, Duck Dynasty and Psych.  Cassidy is not afraid to just be herself no matter who she is with, she makes an effort to be a friend to those who need one, she has a special love for children and great respect for the elderly, she has a great loyalty and love for her brother and sister, she has a real love for the temple, and has a smile that is truly genuine.  I love Cassidy with all of my heart and am so grateful for the opportunity that I've been given to be her mother.

Week 4 in Big Spring....

I loved talking to you guys so much, you all look so amazing!!! I wish we could have stayed on for hours, I really felt for a little bit like I was back home. I got your guys letters today! Thank you so much! It really is so awesome  to see mail in the mail box haha. It sounds like you are all doing awesome. It really is great to see the blessings that we have received these past few months. This week of work was kinda difficult, we decided to drop a few investigators since they really werent progressing. It is depressing and disappointing, but hopefully we planted that seed of faith so that one day they may realize the truth. But we also met a lot of new people. My area also contains two little Texas towns, Coahoma and Forsan. We go to Coahoma every now and then since we have an investigator out there right now, but we went to Forsan for the first time on Friday. Forsan....haha there is only a few hundred people there, and we tried just about all. We got rejected most of the time, but we did meet one person who used to be a member! We had a really great discussion with him, and hopefully we can help re activate him.
Well Mom, thank you again for just being so awesome. I loved all the gifts you gave me and all the love you guys send me, you  guys are the best. I will be writing you all a letter today, I hope it gets to you soon! I love you guys so much, keep the faith! I love you <3

Random reflections on Christmas this year.........

I loved being with Brenda, Alicia, Angie and their families for our Brown Family Christmas Party, and I loved the opportunity that we all had to share some thoughts about what we loved about one another.  We really do have a great family!!

Cassidy, Christine, Jordan and Kyle working on a Star Wars puzzle..........

Christmas Eve was spent with Grandma and Grandpa Backus and Cindy.....and Cody....kind of.

We always give one another ornaments on Christmas Eve, and this year Cassidy and Christine were given framed pictures of the Grandmas they were named after, Cassidy Drue and Christine Linda. My ornament was a picture of Grandpa Berrett and we each shared qualities that they possessed.

We received a text from Kathleen that the Brown Family Christmas Eve Party in Olympia had a surprise guest show up at dinner time.  Uncle Randy always has a way of being the life of the party :).  What a great surprise!!

Digger sent me a pic of their place on Navarre with Christmas lights on their balcony overlooking the beach :).

The highlight of Christmas Day was talking to Cody via Skype.  It was so good to see his face and hear his voice.......

I asked him where he was getting his haircut and he told me that he bought some clippers and is cutting his own hair, I would have never guessed he would have the nerve.........

No explanation needed.

Week 3 in Big Spring.........

This is Elder Backus with President and Sister Augustin.

So Im not going to lie, this past week was pretty rough, haha easily the hardest one on the mish. I mean I have missed everybody back home since I left, but this week it was just amplified, and I got really homesick!  It kind of really stunk, but really you just have to learn how to overcome it all. I was reading one of Elder Bednar's talks which talked about the enabling power of the Atonement. We sometimes tend to think of the Atonement only for sinners, but the truth is that the Atonement is for all of us, to strengthen us. Its not only for repentance, its also for growth. That talk really was a "mission changer" for me. After I read it I got feeling a little bit better and started to try and work even harder. We had a good couple of days to end the week! We were walking down a street in a rougher neighborhood when we saw some mexican guys throwing a football around. My companion was a little apprehensive, but I told him to follow my lead. I talked with them and asked them if we could play a game. If me and my companion won, then they would have to let us talk with them for 5 minutes. If we lost, then we would leave them be and never bother them again. Haha well they took up the offer, they thought a couple of white boys like us couldn't play...haha they called me Justin Bieber...hey. Haha well my companion and I beat them pretty easily, I just threw it high and my companion would grab it, he is about 6 foot 7. Haha they were shocked, they kept asking "do they teach you football in your church?" Hahaha so afterwards we got to talk with them about the church. We answered all their questions, and our 5 minutes turned into about 45. One of them was Joe, who recently got out of prison for selling dope. He has 6 kids and no job, and really didnt believe that God even cared. I really didnt know how to answer his doubt, but we just shared our testimonies about our Heavenly Father, and somehow, someway, (the Spirit actually) Joe seemed to really understand. We left them all with our information, told them to keep practicing their football skills, and scheduled return appointments with them. One thing that I definitely have learned here is that the Gospel is for everybody. Many people would consider Big Spring a "hopeless town" There is a lot of crime here, and most people are very poor. I was terrified to talk with anybody here really. But once you share your testimony of the truth, they always listen, and they ALWAYS, even in the smallest degree, feel something. The gospel is pretty awesome haha.
I will be skyping you guys at around 4:15 on wednesday, I cant wait!! I will tell you all a lot more about the people i am teaching and such, but I really just want to hear from you guys. I love you all so much, have a great couple days, and I will see you on wednesday!
Love, Elder Backus

Pre Christmas fun..........

Just a little look at what we did the Sunday before Christmas.....................

On Christmas Eve, our family has a tradition of giving an ornament to each member of the family that represents something significant in the last year of that individual.  This year I made this ornament for Cody, it has the sheet music from "Called to Serve" mod podged on it along with bells and glitter.  When I was in the MTC we sang this song almost every day and it truly made me feel like in the strength of the Lord I could do anything.  We hung it on our tree today and it makes me feel like Cody is just a little closer to us.

Cassidy and Christine in their Christmas dresses.

Its great to have the Neeley's here for Christmas!!  I love this picture of Alicia and Matt :).

Elijah, Cassidy, Jordan and Avery just hanging out......

We (Neeley's, Paynter's and Backus's) went to Temple Square to see the lights.  This is some of our group.  We dressed warm and took hot chocolate with us and offered some to a couple of missionaries, but they politely declined as it is against the rules (not sure why).

Cassidy and Christine at the reflecting pool with the floating Nativity.

Angie and Kaylie posing for a mother daughter pic!

I do enjoy spending time with my sisters.  It was a lot of fun to be with them and their families.

Steve and I got married in this beautiful temple 20 years ago next month.

I LOVE these girls!!!

Beautiful lit trees as you enter City Creek.  Colby, Riley, Cassidy and Christine being patient with me as I take picture after picture after picture............

Week 2 in Big Spring.....

Dear Mom,
Things are going pretty well here. I got to baptize and confirm one of the Ramirez girls, which was really cool. Even though I never really got to teach them and watch their progression, it was still very very cool to be able to take part in it. Honestly, I hardly ever use my Spanish here, which kind of stinks. We teach all here in Big Spring, well mostly white, mexican and black and they all speak English. Its pretty evenly spread out actually. We still study Spanish every morning though, so we are just waiting for the right person to come along!!
Haha Mom it gets so real out here.  The Law of Chastity is big out here..... oh man. We deal with it all.  I would share some of the experiences....but its probably better if I didnt. Its a very serious matter of course but its just crazy what some peoples ideas are. Haha definitely working on becoming more mature so I can talk about that stuff comfortably. Thank you so much for everything, I am totally living comfortably. I will continue to write the fam a letter each week. I just need to tell you how awesome you are for making that Christmas Countdown, it really is great and makes it easier to get up in the morning :).  Tell everyone thanks!!  Big Spring isn't terribly big, so I'm really starting to get the small town feel.  Me and my companion are working pretty hard.  We are teaching some people now and have a couple who have committed to a date in January, but they have a lot to work through before they can be fully ready.  So we have a lot of work to do.  Still think its cool that President Uchtdorf learned how to fly here, right??  If only he was here to help us out...haha!  Its very weird not seeing any mountains here.  Big Spring is actually built on a hill, but still is rather flat.  The skies are just enormous....you can see forever!  And the sunsets are breathtaking!  Mom, I know that you may worry about me a lot but I am doing just fine.  The work is very hard, and I do get homesick from time to time, but that's how it should be.  I miss you so much, and now I realize more than ever how much you do for me.  Thank you for never backing down in your beliefs, I did have to lean on your testimony for quite a while, but now because of you, I have one of my own.  Do you think you could send me that one picture of Joseph Smith and his son (Liz Lemon)?  Random request but thank you!   I Love you so much Mom.

Love,
Your only, best, favorite son,
Elder Backus (Cody)

Dear Dad,
So I am here in Big Spring and like I said in my email its vey different but the other day I found out that Ryan Tannehill is actually from here, he played high school ball here, and now his little brother is the starting quarterback!  They all still live here, so I looked them up in the phone book and I'm dead set on knocking on their door this week, haha!  I will tell you how it goes.  The weather here is cold but I have such an awesome family that has provided me with everything I need.  I have really been noticing the living conditions here.  The people here work very very hard, but still get very small paychecks.  It really has opened my eyes even wider about the importance of education but also it makes me so grateful for you.  this summer I got to see how hard you work and I have used your example so much out here, it has made me so grateful for you.  I know that you don't receive the thanks you deserve, and I know the job situation has been a struggle, but know that I am finally realizing what it takes to be a man, and how hard you have to work at it, because of your example.  I can honestly say without a doubt I am where I am because of you.  I look up to you more than you'll ever know.  I hope you and the fan are enjoying the Christmas season!  Love you dad!!

Go Utes,
Cody

Christine's Christmas Dance Show

Christine had her Christmas Dance Show with Murray Community Dance today.  I think, as far as I know, that she may be the only dancer on the Brown Family side????  Please help me out if there is another cousin out there that dances because I need support.  I am NOT a natural when it comes to being a 'dance mom'.  I never took dance when I was younger, so I am of no help to Christine when she's needing to practice, I can never measure accurately when ordering a costume, I won't get up at 5:00 in the morning to stand in line for 'close to the stage' seats and I don't own blue eyeshadow or red lipstick (I broke down and bought some yesterday).  Aside from that, I do LOVE to watch Christine get up on stage and dance like nobody is watching, she has no fear, she has rhythm, and can truly dance to the beat.........

First week in Big Spring, Texas - home of the air force base that Elder Uchtdorf learned how to fly.....

Hey hey que pasa
So I am so sorry that I couldn't make contact with you guys, once we got to the mission home they said that we weren't allowed to email home...so I have had to wait until today. I guess I can start with President Augustin. Hahahaha what an interesting fellow. He is definitely nothing like I really expected, he's rather intense. But I think I like him.  He reminds me of Regis Philbin but Mission President edition if that makes sense. So that night we found out where our first area was. I was assigned and currently residing in Big Spring, Texas. Big Spring. What a place. Turns out there used to be an air force base here, and President Uchtdorf learned how to fly here! Kinda cool. Its relatively small, a population of about 20,000. Most families here are extremely poor, its really kind of a culture shock going from our neighborhood to the houses down here. My companion is Elder Checketts from Layton. He is 18 as well, so i think we probably are the youngest companionship in the history of the church...haha he has been out for almost 4 months. He is 6 foot 7, so thats awesome. The people here in Big Spring....well I think just about all of them smoke and drink, and I think all of them have some sort of tatoo. Haha there is no office work here, its strictly oil and Wal-mart,   They are defintely a different kind of people than I am used to, but for the most part they are very humble, and seem to have a good knowledge of God. I walked into a baptism, meaning Elder Checkett's and his companion set up a baptism for two little girls, Maria and Crystal, for this Saturday, so I get to take part in that. Teaching here is very hard. While the people here mostly love God, they really dont want to change in their ways. They are usually courteous, and most times we get to make an appointment, but when we show up they usually check the peep hole and dont answer. It can be pretty frustrating! We are currently teaching a few people...one of them, William, is a tall old black vietnam vet. He has a firm belief in the bible, and we thought we were finally making progress with him until he asked us about Mars...he believes that we all used to live on Mars before this life, and that when Noah was on the ark, that was the time when the human race travelled somehow to planet Earth...we have a lot of work to do. The ward is pretty small, about 70-80 members showed up. I had to speak of course. Afterwards when I got to meet them, they all seemed very nice. They aren't the best at being member missionaries, and our ward mission leader isn't the most diligent, but its okay. The work here is progressing, and I know that we can do it! Unfortunately, the rule is only 1 hour on the computer again, and my comp is pretty strict about his obedience, which is good, so I will send you a letter with more detail! My address is
1429 E. 6th St. Apt. #34
Big Spring, TX 79720
P.s. I really love the Christmas countdown, i look forward to opening up a new one everyday. Tell everybody that you got a picture from how much it really means to me and helps me out! The tie is PERFECT. I love you mom, I will talk to you later
